The Complete Google Business Profile Guide for Dental Practices
Your GBP is the single most important local ranking signal. This step-by-step guide covers everything from category selection to photo strategy and review velocity.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is not a directory listing. It is an active, dynamic ranking asset — and it is the single most influential factor in whether your practice appears in the Google Map Pack. Most dental clinics claim their GBP, fill in the basics, and then ignore it. The practices that dominate local search treat it as a living channel that requires consistent attention.
This guide covers every section of your GBP and what optimisation looks like in practice.
1. Business Name
Use your legal trading name. Do not keyword-stuff your business name (e.g., "Smith Dental — Best Implants Raleigh NC"). Google has become increasingly strict about this, and violations can result in suspension. Competitors can and do flag keyword-stuffed names. Your name should match exactly what appears on your signage, website, and legal documents.
2. Primary and Secondary Categories
This is one of the highest-leverage fields in your entire GBP. Your primary category tells Google what type of business you are and heavily influences which searches trigger your listing.
Most practices default to "Dentist." That's fine for general dentistry. But if you offer implants, cosmetic work, or orthodontics, selecting more specific primary categories — "Cosmetic Dentist," "Dental Implants Periodontist," "Orthodontist" — can dramatically expand your visibility for high-intent searches.
You can add up to 10 secondary categories. Use them all. Common additions: Teeth Whitening Service, Emergency Dental Service, Pediatric Dentist, Oral Surgeon. Only add categories that genuinely reflect services you provide.
3. Business Description
You have 750 characters. Use the first 250 most carefully — that's what's visible before "Read more." Lead with your primary value proposition, include your most important service keywords naturally, and mention your service area. Avoid generic filler like "we are committed to providing excellent dental care." Every sentence should either signal relevance to Google or build trust with a prospective patient.
4. Services Section
GBP's Services section is significantly underused. You can list every procedure you offer, add descriptions to each, and group them into categories (Cosmetic, Restorative, Preventive, etc.). Each service listing is an additional relevance signal for that specific procedure. A practice with 40 services listed in detail outranks one with 5 generic entries, all else being equal.
5. Photos: Volume, Freshness, and Type
Google's own data shows that businesses with more photos receive significantly more direction requests and website clicks. For dental practices, the recommended photo strategy is:
- Exterior photos — multiple angles, at different times of day, including the parking area and signage. Patients use these to confirm they've found the right place before walking in.
- Interior photos — reception area, treatment rooms, sterilisation area (signals cleanliness and modernity). Anxious patients make decisions based on these.
- Team photos — individual and group shots. Patients book with people they feel they know. Faces build trust.
- Clinical photos — before/after cases (with patient consent), equipment, procedure environments.
Aim for a minimum of 30–40 photos at launch and add 8–12 new images monthly. Google's algorithm considers recency — stale photo libraries signal a potentially dormant business.
6. Reviews: Velocity, Recency, and Response
Reviews affect your GBP ranking in two ways: the raw signal (number and average rating) feeds Google's prominence score, and the text content of reviews feeds relevance — reviews that mention "dental implants," "Invisalign," or specific procedures help you rank for those terms.
Velocity: Aim for at least 4–6 new reviews per month. Build a review request into your post-appointment workflow — an automated SMS 2–4 hours after the appointment with a direct GBP review link converts significantly better than asking in person.
Response: Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours. Responses signal engagement to Google and demonstrate professionalism to prospective patients who are reading reviews before deciding.
7. Google Posts
Posts appear on your GBP listing and in local search results. They have a short shelf life (offer posts expire; update posts show for 7 days in some interfaces), but consistent posting signals an active, engaged business. Recommended cadence: one post per week. Content ideas: seasonal promotions, new service announcements, educational tips, team spotlights, before/after case features (with consent).
8. Questions and Answers
The Q&A section is public and anyone can ask or answer questions. This means competitors and spam bots can post misleading answers to questions about your practice. Check your Q&A section weekly. Seed it with the most common questions patients ask (procedure questions, insurance, parking, hours) and answer them yourself — Google allows business owners to do this.
9. Attributes
GBP allows you to add attributes like "Accepts new patients," "Online booking available," "Wheelchair accessible," and a growing list of health and safety attributes. These appear prominently in your listing and directly influence patient decisions. Enable every attribute that applies to your practice.
Ongoing Maintenance
GBP optimisation is not a one-time project. Google regularly adds new features, and your competitors are continuously updating their profiles. Set a monthly review cycle: audit for suggested edits (third parties can propose changes to your listing), check for unanswered Q&A, verify your hours are current, and post new photos. The practices that maintain this discipline build a compound advantage that becomes very difficult for less active competitors to close.
